Description
Levamisole is the l-isomer of tetramisole. The chemical name of levamisole is (?)-2,3,5,6-tetrahydro-6- phenylimidazo[2,1-b] thiazole. Levamisole is an antinematodal drug with a broad range of activity in several host species. It is worldwide approved and marketed for use in cattle, sheep, swine, poultry and dogs. Levamisole is a nematodicidal compound effective against lung and GI tract nematodes but not against cestode and trematode parasites. A major advantage is its formulation flexibility rendering optional routes of administration (oral, parenteral, topical). Depending upon formulation, the drug is marketed as levamisole hydrochloride or phosphate salts (oral drenches, feed premixes and injectable preparations) and as levamisole base (pour-on). Levamisole hydrochloride, a white to pale cream crystalline powder, is highly soluble in water (1 g in 2 ml of water). This solubility facilitates the formulation of an injectable solution and a stable drench.

Levamisole hydrochloride is an anthelmintic. The activity of levamisole is about twice as high as that of abscisicidal, and the toxicity and side effects are lower. Levamisole can cause muscle paralysis of roundworms and then excrete them in the feces. It is mainly used as an anti-worm and anti-hookworm.
