Description & Application:
The primary use for procaine is as a topical anaesthetic.
Procaine is used less frequently today since more effective (and hypoallergenic) alternatives such as lido-caine (Xylocaine) exist. It has been discontinued from US markets.
Like other local anesthetics (such as mepivacaine, and prilocaine), procaine is a vasodilator, and is often coadministered with epinephrine for the purpose of vasoconstriction. Vasoconstriction helps to reduce bleeding, increases the duration and quality of anesthesia, prevents the drug from reaching systemic circulation in large amounts, and overall reduces the amount of anesthetic required.
Unlike co-caine, a vasoconstrictor, procaine does not have the euphoric and addictive qualities that put it at risk for abuse. MD-MA manufactures also use procaine as an additive at ratios ranging from 1:1 up to 10% M DMA with 90% procaine, which can be life-threatening.
Procaine, an ester anesthetic, is metabolized in the plasma by the enzyme pseudocholinesterase through hydrolysis into para-amino benzoic acid (PABA), which is then excreted by the kidneys into the urine.
A 1% procaine injection has been recommended for the treatment of extravasation complications associated with venipuncture (along with moist heat, ASA, s-teroids, antibiotics). It has likewise been recommended for treatment of inadvertent intra-arterial injections (10 ml of 1% procaine), as it helps relieve pain and vascular spasm.
Procaine is an occasional additive in illicit street drugs
Product uses
Procaine HCl is a local anesthetic drug for the amino ester groups. It is mainly used to reduce intramuscular injection of penicillin pain, and also for dental use. As the merchandise name Novocain is everywhere, in some areas procaine is generally known as Novakaine. Its main role is sodium channel blockers. Because of its sympathetic, anti-inflammatory, perfusion enhancement and emotional enhancement, it is used in some countries for treatment.
The application of procaine leads to inhibition of neuronal activity. Depression causes the nervous system to become allergic, causing anxiety and vibration, resulting in mild to severe convulsions. Studies of animals have shown that the use of procaine causes an increase in dopamine and serotonin levels in the brain. Other problems may vary due to individual tolerance to procaine dose. Central nervous system excitation can cause tension and dizziness, if excessive coordination may lead to respiratory failure. Procaine may also cause myocardial weakness leading to cardiac arrest.
Procaine can also cause allergic reactions, leading to individual problems of breathing, rash and swelling. The allergic reaction to procaine is usually not against procaine itself, but its metabolite PABA. About one of about 3,000 people has an atypical form of pseudobase esterase, which does not require hydrolysis of ester anesthetics such as procaine, resulting in increased levels of narcotics in the blood and increased toxicity.
