Boric acid, also called hydrogen borate, boracic acid and acidum boricum, is a weak acid of boron often used as an antiseptic, insecticide, flame retardant, neutron absorber, or precursor to other chemical compounds. It has the chemical formula H3BO3 (sometimes written B(OH)3), and exists in the form of colorless crystals or a white powder that dissolves in water. When occurring as a mineral, it is called sassolite.
The appearance of boric acid is white powder crystal or scale crystal with luster on triclinic plane. It has greasy handle and no odor. Soluble in water, alcohol, glycerin, ethers and essential oils. No smell. The taste is slightly sour, bitter and sweet. It feels greasy in contact with skin. No change in exposed air. It can volatilize with water vapor. When heated to 100-105 ºC, metaboric acid is formed due to the loss of a molecule of water. When heated to 104-160 ºC for a long time, metaboric acid is transformed into pyroboric acid, and anhydrous substance is formed at higher temperature. The pH of 0.1mol/l aqueous solution was 5.1. 1g can be dissolved in 18ML cold water, 4ml boiling water, 18ML cold ethanol, 6ml boiling ethanol and 4ml glycerol. The solubility in water increases with the addition of hyd acid, citric acid and tartaric acid. The relative density was 1.4347. Melting point 184 ºC (decomposition). The boiling point is 300 ºC. The median lethal dose (rat, oral) was 5.14g/kg. It's stimulating. The lowest lethal dose: 640 mg / kg for adults, 8.6 g / kg for skin, 29 mg / kg for intravenous; 200 mg / kg for infants. The maximum allowable concentration in air is 10 mg / m3.
